Carpet versus hardwood is one of the most common dilemmas Toronto homeowners face. The truth is that both are excellent — the right choice depends on the room, your lifestyle, and your priorities. Here's how we help clients decide.
Comfort and Warmth
Carpet wins on comfort. It's soft, warm underfoot, and it muffles sound — which is why bedrooms and family rooms so often call for carpet and broadloom. In a cold Toronto winter, carpet in the bedrooms is a genuine luxury. Hardwood is harder and cooler, though area rugs (we make custom area rugs) bridge that gap nicely.
Durability and Longevity
Hardwood is the long-term champion. A quality hardwood floor can last for generations and can be refinished multiple times to look new again. Carpet, by contrast, typically needs replacing every 8 to 15 years depending on quality and traffic. If you're thinking in decades, hardwood is the more durable investment.
Maintenance
Hardwood is easier to keep clean — a sweep and the occasional damp mop. Carpet needs regular vacuuming and periodic deep cleaning, and it can trap allergens, which matters for sensitive households. That said, modern stain-resistant carpet fibres have made upkeep far easier than it used to be.
Cost
Carpet generally has a lower upfront cost than hardwood. However, because hardwood lasts so much longer and can be refinished rather than replaced, its cost over time can actually be lower. Consider both the initial price and the lifespan.
Resale Value
Hardwood tends to add more resale appeal, especially on main floors. Many Toronto buyers specifically look for hardwood in living and dining areas. Bedrooms, however, are a place where buyers often expect and appreciate carpet.
Our Room-by-Room Recommendation
For most Toronto homes we suggest hardwood on the main floor — living room, dining room, hallways — for durability and resale, and carpet in the bedrooms for comfort and quiet. This is exactly the approach we took in a recent Leaside hardwood project and a North York carpet project. Families in North York and Leaside consistently love this combination.
