Laminate and luxury vinyl are the two most popular budget-friendly, wood-look flooring options — and they're often confused. They look similar but perform quite differently. Here's how to choose between laminate and luxury vinyl.
The Core Difference
Laminate has a fibreboard (wood-based) core topped with a photographic image layer and a hard wear surface. Vinyl is made entirely of plastic (PVC) layers. That difference in core material drives almost everything else.
Water Resistance
This is the biggest distinction. Luxury vinyl is 100% waterproof — its plastic core won't swell if it gets wet, making it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Standard laminate's fibreboard core can swell and ruin the plank if water seeps into the seams. If moisture is a concern, vinyl is the safer bet.
Durability and Scratch Resistance
Laminate actually has a very hard wear layer and often resists surface scratches and dents slightly better than vinyl, which can be a plus in busy, dry areas. Both are durable; high-grade laminate (AC4 rated) is excellent for high traffic, as in our Scarborough wide-plank laminate project.
Feel Underfoot
Laminate tends to feel a bit harder and can sound slightly hollow without a good underlay. Vinyl, especially thicker rigid-core (SPC) products, often feels a touch softer and quieter. Both improve significantly with quality underlay.
Appearance
Both have come a long way in realism. Laminate's image layer can be extremely detailed and crisp, while premium vinyl offers excellent embossing and texture. It often comes down to the specific product rather than the category.
Cost
The two are comparable in price, with plenty of overlap. Budget laminate and budget vinyl are similarly affordable; premium versions of each cost more. Neither has a decisive price advantage.

Choose luxury vinyl for any area where water is a risk — basements, kitchens, bathrooms, condos. Choose quality laminate for dry, high-traffic living areas where you want a hard, scratch-resistant surface and a crisp wood look. Both are smart, budget-friendly choices.
